MUI Condemns 'Judaization' of Al-Aqsa Mosque, Calls for Special Fatwa
The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has strongly condemned various Israeli efforts perceived as the ongoing Judaization of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the city of Al-Quds. MUI Chairman for Foreign Relations and International Cooperation, Prof Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, is even pushing for the issuance of a special fatwa concerning the protection of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the rejection of the Judaization of Al-Quds. According to Prof Sudarnoto, the Al-Aqsa Mosque is one of the holy sites holding a special position for Muslims. Besides being the first qibla for Muslims and the location of the Isra and Mi’raj event of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Al-Aqsa is also part of the historical and civilizational heritage of the Islamic world. ‘All forms of threats to its sanctity, legal status, historical identity, and religious function are threats to the religious rights of Muslims as well as threats to the humanitarian heritage that must be protected by the international community,’ Prof Sudarnoto said when contacted by Republika.co.id on Saturday (13/6/2026). He expressed deep concern and condemned various Israeli actions leading to the erasure of Islamic identity at the Al-Aqsa Mosque. According to him, restrictions on Muslim worshippers, the weakening of the Jordanian Islamic Waqf authority, and attempts to alter the historical and legal status of the Al-Aqsa Mosque constitute serious violations of international law and human rights.
