MUI Chairman Speaks Out on the Free Nutritious Meal Programme

The Chairman of the Central Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Anwar Iskandar, believes that the government’s Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) programme is a noble initiative from a religious perspective.

However, he cautioned that several issues remain regarding the programme’s implementation on the ground. He suspects that various complaints arising are caused by irregularities committed by dishonest individuals.

Nevertheless, he noted that the government has taken enforcement measures against various discovered violations.

In addition to providing benefits to students and religious school students (santri), Anwar stated that the MBG programme also contributes to job creation and stimulates the community’s economy.

According to him, the establishment of MBG kitchens is capable of absorbing a large number of workers. It also provides benefits to micro-entrepreneurs and farmers, ranging from tempeh and tofu producers, poultry farmers, to fishermen and vegetable farmers.

Due to its wide-ranging benefits, he rejected any discourse regarding the termination of the MBG programme. He argued that any shortcomings should be rectified rather than used as a reason to dissolve the programme.
