Jakarta – The Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) has expressed deep condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, resulting from Israeli-American attacks on 28 February 2026.

The statement of condolences is contained in an MUI Fatwa on the escalation of Israeli-American attacks against Iran, published via Letter No. Kep-28/DP-MUI/III/2026, signed by MUI Chairman KH Anwar Iskandar and MUI Secretary-General Buya Amirsyah Tambunan on Sunday, 1 March 2026.

“MUI expresses deep sorrow over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as a result of Israeli-American attacks. We say inna ilaihi raji’un. As a martyr, we pray that he will be among the inhabitants of paradise. Amen,” said MUI Chairman KH Anwar Iskandar in the statement.

MUI condemned attacks by Israel and the United States, deeming them contrary to humanity and the Preamble of the 1945 Indonesian Constitution, particularly the phrase “contribute to the maintenance of world order based on freedom, permanent peace, and social justice.”

MUI understood Iran’s retaliatory attacks on various Gulf regions as a response to American and Israeli attacks. According to MUI, such retaliatory strikes are justified under international law because they targeted military bases.

By contrast, MUI characterised Israeli and American bomb attacks as targeting an elementary school in Iran, resulting in approximately 160 children killed.

MUI also assessed that Israeli and American military attacks on Iran constitute a serious escalation with the potential to draw the Middle East region into a wider and more open conflict.

“This situation should not be viewed as an isolated incident, but rather as part of a larger geopolitical configuration. It is the duty and responsibility of all nations to achieve peace in order to provide maximum protection to civilians,” it stated.

MUI also suspected strategic motives behind the attacks, namely a systematic attempt to weaken Iran’s strategic position in the Gulf region whilst limiting Iran’s support for the Palestinian independence struggle.

In the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, MUI urged various nations to serve as peacemakers to end military attacks, which it assessed could become an instrument of political pressure to secure Israeli regional dominance over Palestine.
