MUI: Board of Peace Cannot Be Trusted
Republika.co.id, Jakarta — The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has criticised Indonesia’s membership of the Board of Peace (BoP), particularly in the wake of attacks by Washington and Tel Aviv on Iran. According to MUI Deputy Chairman Buya Anwar Abbas, the figure of the United States President and BoP chair, Donald Trump, is highly problematic.
He explained that Trump is widely recognised as a major supporter of Zionism and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He has recently become known for his far-right political vision to realise a Greater Israel whose territory would include all of Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and parts of Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.
“That ambition is no longer just on paper; they have already realised it by controlling the entire Palestinian territories they occupy. The establishment of a Greater Israel is just a matter of time,” Buya Anwar Abbas told Republika on Saturday (7 March 2026).
Therefore, he continued, BoP has lost its raison d’être or logical reason for existing since Israel joined the council. Moreover, the US joined Israel in attacking Iran. This military action has provoked unrest in the Middle East that remains unresolved.
“What more can be expected from the Board of Peace? I think there is nothing left. For BoP as an institution it can no longer be trusted,” said the chairman of Muhammadiyah’s Central Leadership (PP Muhammadiyah).
