MUI Appreciates US-Iran Ceasefire Initiative, Praises Pakistan's Role
The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has positively welcomed the ceasefire initiative between the United States (US) and Iran mediated by Pakistan. This step is considered important for easing global geopolitical tensions and opening opportunities for restoring international economic and security stability.
MUI’s Chairman for Foreign Relations and International Cooperation, KH Prof Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, stated that they welcome the initiative.
“Thank you to the Pakistani government for making this very important decision for de-escalation and realising social and political calm as well as the recovery or stability of the global economy,” said KH Prof Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim to Republika on Thursday (9/4/2026).
Even though Pakistan is facing issues with its neighbour Afghanistan, its courage in taking a major step in the US-Iran context deserves appreciation.
This step represents an important development in easing geopolitical tensions that have the potential to disrupt global security and stability.
“This de-escalation (US-Iran) not only lowers the risk of open conflict but also opens space for restoring market confidence, energy stability, and strengthening multilateral cooperation,” said Sudarnoto.
Regarding the conditions put forward by Tehran to Washington, this reflects demands for sovereignty and national security guarantees. Additionally, according to Sudarnoto, Iran also emphasises respect for international law, cessation of unilateral pressures, and recognition of the right to develop technology and non-intervention.
