The Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) has assessed that the selection of Mojtaba Khamenei as Supreme Leader of Iran, replacing his father Ali Khamenei, will strengthen Iran’s position in facing the dynamics of conflict in the Middle East.

Prof Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, Chairman of the MUI’s Department of Foreign Relations and International Cooperation, stated that the new leadership in Iran has emerged amid escalating regional tensions, particularly concerning the conflict with Israel and the involvement of the United States.

According to him, brutal attacks by Israel and the United States on Ayatollah Ali Khamenei are being met with counterattacks by Iran that have caused massive destruction in Israel and important American centres across various countries.

“This means that the calculations and expectations of America and Israel have experienced very serious failure. With the selection of Mojtaba Khamenei, Israel and America will experience bankruptcy in moral, economic, political and military terms,” Sudarnoto told Republika.co.id on Tuesday (10 March 2026).

According to Sudarnoto, Mojtaba Khamenei not only has a biological relationship with the previous leader, but is also assessed to have inherited the ideological line that has been the foundation of Iranian politics.

“Mojtaba is not merely the biological son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but also an ideological son who will always steadfastly uphold the ideology of resistance and eliminate injustice and oppression as has been done by America and Israel,” he said.
