Muhasabah (Self-Examination)
In linguistic terms, muhasabah originates from the word hasaba, meaning to count, assess, or evaluate. In the study of Sufism, muhasabah denotes introspection, self-awareness, self-evaluation, or looking inward at all deeds. Through muhasabah, a person seeks to assess personal shortcomings, sins, and mistakes.
Muhasabah is a praiseworthy trait so that a person does not become arrogant with his deeds. ‘Do you think you will enter Paradise, while not yet made clear by Allah those among you who fought in His cause or the patient ones?’ (QS Ali Imran [3]:142).
Allah forbids mankind from feeling themselves clean of sins. ‘So do not regard yourselves as pure. He (Allah) knows who are the pious,’ (QS An-Najm [53]:32).
The companion Umar bin Khattab offered the advice, ‘Hold yourselves to account before you are held to account. Weigh your deeds before you are weighed.’ Islam teaches that people should remain humble and not be arrogant.
The strong are not those who never fall, but those who can rise again after falling. The mighty are not those who never lose, but those who can learn from their losses.
The pure are not those who never commit sins, but those who are aware of their mistakes, seek forgiveness for their sins, and commit not to repeat their actions.
Ramadan is a moment for muhasabah, to improve oneself by increasing remembrance of Allah (zikr), seeking forgiveness, and undertaking islah: improving oneself with righteous deeds, clear thinking, and a pure heart.
