Muhammadiyah to Celebrate Eid al-Adha on 27 May 2026, Government to Hold 'Isbat' Hearing on 17 May 2026

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Eid al-Adha is one of the major religious holidays for Muslims, celebrated on the 10th of Zulhijah in the Islamic calendar. This holiday is also known as the Day of Sacrifice or Eid al-Hajj.

The Central Executive Board (PP) of Muhammadiyah has determined that Eid al-Adha 2026 will fall on the 10th of Zulhijah 1447 Hijri, which corresponds to 27 May 2026.

The beginning of the month, or the 1st of Zulhijah 1447 Hijri, will fall on 18 May 2026. Consequently, the Day of Arafah, or the 9th of Zulhijah 1447 Hijri, will fall on 26 May 2026.

This system is designed to create uniformity in determining the beginning of the Islamic months for Muslims around the world.

Through this method, the determination of the beginning of the Islamic months, including Zulhijah, will no longer be based on the geographical boundaries of a country, but rather on the principle of global visibility of the new moon.

Muhammadiyah explained that the conjunction before Zulhijah 1447 Hijri will occur on Saturday, 16 May 2026, at 20:01:02 UTC.

However, at sunset on the day of the conjunction, there will be no region on Earth that meets the Global Calendar Parameter (PKG) 1 criteria.

This criterion includes a minimum lunar altitude of five degrees and a minimum elongation of eight degrees before 24:00 UTC.

Muhammadiyah also stated that PKG 2 will not be met. After 24:00 UTC, there will be no region in the Americas that meets the criteria of a minimum lunar altitude of five degrees, a minimum elongation of eight degrees, and the conjunction occurring before dawn in New Zealand.

“Because these two parameters are not met, the beginning of Zulhijah cannot begin on 17 May, but is set for Monday, 18 May 2026,” said Muhammadiyah.

Based on this determination, the Day of Arafah, or the 9th of Zulhijah 1447 Hijri, will fall on 26 May 2026, while Eid al-Adha will be celebrated on 27 May 2026.

“The ‘Isbat’ hearing for the beginning of Zulhijah 1447 Hijri will be held on 17 May 2026, coinciding with 29 Zulkaidah 1447 Hijri, at the H.M. Rasjidi Auditorium, Ministry of Religious Affairs,” said the Director of Islamic Affairs and Sharia Guidance at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Arsad Hidayat, as reported by Antara on Wednesday (13/5/2026).
