Muhammadiyah Sets the Date for Eid al-Adha in 2026

The central leadership of Muhammadiyah has determined that Eid al-Adha, 10th Zulhijah 1447 Hijri, will fall on Wednesday Wage, 27th May 2026. This determination is based on the Single Global Hijri Calendar (KHGT) method, a calendar system that refers to global astronomical calculations.

According to this information, the key dates in Zulhijah 1447 H are as follows:

This determination uses the Global Calendar Parameters (PKG), designed to provide uniformity for the beginning of Hijri months for Muslims around the world. Astronomically, the conjunction before Zulhijah 1447 H is predicted to occur on Saturday Pon, 16th May 2026 at 20:01:02 UTC.

However, at sunset on the day of this conjunction, the requirements in the PKG are not yet met in any region of the world. These parameters include:

Because both of these parameters are not met on 17th May, the beginning of Zulhijah is set to fall on Monday, 18th May 2026. This underlies the calculation that Eid al-Adha will fall on 27th May 2026.

The Secretary of the Tarjih and Tajdid Council of Muhammadiyah, Muhamad Rofiq Muzakkir, explained that one of the main keys in the KHGT system is the concept of ijtima qabla al-fajr or the occurrence of conjunction before dawn in the eastern part of the earth.

“The most important factor for determining when Eid or fasting will be is whether the conjunction has occurred before dawn in the east,” said Rofiq at the closing of the KHGT Halaqah at Ahmad Dahlan University, Thursday (14/5). (AT/I-1)
