Muhammadiyah Sets Idul Adha on 27 May, Government to Hold Isbat Meeting on 17 May
The Ministry of Religious Affairs will hold an Isbat session (determination) for the start of Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 Hijriah on 17 May to determine the date of Idul Adha in Indonesia.
“The Isbat session is a deliberative forum that brings together the government, Islamic mass organisations, and experts in falak and astronomy to set the start of the Hijriah month,” said Director General of Islamic Community Guidance at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Abu Rokhmad, in Jakarta on Wednesday (6/5).
Abu explained that the process for determining the start of Dhu al-Hijjah integrates hisab (astronomical calculation) and rukyat (crescent moon sighting) methods.
He stated that these two approaches complement each other to produce a comprehensive decision.
He explained that hisab data provides an initial picture of the crescent’s position, while rukyat serves as factual confirmation through direct observations at various monitoring points across Indonesia.
The Isbat session series will begin with a seminar on the crescent’s position, presenting astronomical data from the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ Hisab Rukyat Team.
The seminar will be broadcast openly. After that, the committee will receive reports on rukyatul hilal results from various observation locations, from western to eastern Indonesia.
“Subsequently, the Minister of Religious Affairs will lead the session by listening to the considerations of the participants before officially determining the start of Dhu al-Hijjah,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Central Leadership (PP) of Muhammadiyah has long determined the start of Ramadan, Shawwal, and Dhu al-Hijjah for 1447 Hijriah.
This determination is based on hakiki hisab of wujudul hilal results, guided by the Majelis Tarjih and Tajdid of PP Muhammadiyah.
Based on Maklumat Pimpinan Pusat Muhammadiyah Number 2/MLM/1.0/E/2025, issued in Yogyakarta on 22 September 2025, PP Muhammadiyah sets 1 Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 H on Monday Kliwon, 18 May 2026.
Thus, the Day of Arafah (9 Dhu al-Hijjah) will fall on Tuesday Pon, 26 May 2026, and Idul Adha (10 Dhu al-Hijjah) will be celebrated on Wednesday Wage, 27 May 2026.
