Muhammadiyah Mourns Passing of Try Sutrisno
Haedar Nashir, Chairman of Muhammadiyah’s Central Leadership (PP), has conveyed condolences over the passing of Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, Try Sutrisno, on Monday, 2 March 2026. Sutrisno died at the age of 90.
Haedar stated that Try Sutrisno was a figure of remarkable determination in matters concerning the nation and state. “Throughout his career, Try Sutrisno was a figure who placed national interests above all else,” said Haedar on Monday.
During his lifetime, Try Sutrisno frequently engaged in discussions with various parties, including Muhammadiyah, to address national issues. According to Haedar, Sutrisno’s concern for the nation’s welfare did not diminish after leaving office.
“The late former Vice President once visited me at Muhammadiyah’s Central Leadership Office in Menteng, Jakarta, to discuss various national matters,” said Haedar. “His spirit of responsibility as a statesman was reflected in his willingness to engage in dialogue and always remain open to exchanging views for Indonesia’s benefit.”
Haedar emphasised the importance of the younger generation emulating the high national spirit demonstrated by the late Try Sutrisno. Amid the various challenges facing the nation, individuals of integrity, sincerity, and strong commitment to national unity and progress are needed.
“Therefore, on behalf of Muhammadiyah, we express our deepest condolences,” he said.
Try Sutrisno was known to have been receiving treatment at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto since 16 February 2026 due to illness. Sutrisno served as the sixth Vice President from 1993 to 1998, serving alongside President Suharto.
His remains are planned to be buried at the National Heroes Cemetery (TMPNU) in Kalibata, Jakarta.
