Chairman of the Hajj and Umrah Development Institute (LPHU) of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership, Ustaz Muhammad Ziyad, has urged all Muhammadiyah members currently on Hajj to carry out the slaughter of qurbani animals in Indonesia. This refers to the decision of the Majelis Tarjih and Tajdid, which states that transferring the location of qurbani slaughter from the Holy Land to the homeland is permissible and brings greater benefit to the ummah.

Ustaz Ziyad stated that the LPHU of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership is tasked with disseminating what has been decided by the Majelis Tarjih and Tajdid of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership, including the slaughter of qurbani animals that can be transferred from the Holy Land to Indonesia, as the Majelis Tarjih has already issued a fatwa that it is permissible.

“Therefore, our task is to coordinate all pilgrims from Muhammadiyah members participating in guidance through the Hajj and Umrah Worship Guidance Group (KBIHU), numbering around 12,500 people. We ask them to implement this tarjih decision, and secondly, to follow the circular from the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah regarding the option of qurbani slaughter in the Holy Land and in Indonesia,” said Ustaz Ziyad to Republika after the Discussion and Socialisation of the Tarjih Fatwa regarding Qurbani Slaughter in Indonesia, held by the LPHU at the Muhammadiyah Central Da’wah Building on Tuesday (28/4/2026).

He explained that there are many Muhammadiyah pilgrims who do not join the KBIHU, as there are no KBIHU in their local areas. The number gathered in KBIHU is around 12,500 people. The LPHU asks them to implement the decision of the Majelis Tarjih and Tajdid regarding qurbani slaughter in the homeland.

From the results of studies from various aspects, he added, slaughtering qurbani animals in Indonesia is more beneficial and must be encouraged. Ustaz Ziyad explained that the LPHU, Muhammadiyah KBIHU, and Aisyiyah collaborate with Lazismu to carry out the slaughter of qurbani animals and their distribution. Thus, data will be known on how many qurbani animals are slaughtered in Indonesia, how many beneficiaries there are, the impacts, and other benefits. This is part of the maqasid syariah as explained by the Majelis Tarjih and Tajdid.

He said that this year, the slaughter of qurbani animals in Indonesia has not been fully handled by the central Lazismu, but by the Lazismu in each region. “Next year, the slaughter and distribution of qurbani will be centralised at the central Lazismu, so the positive impacts will be even more significant, including improving the nutrition of Indonesian society,” he stated.

Ustaz Ziyad added that the plan is for the qurbani meat managed by Lazismu in Central Java and East Java to be canned. Thus, the benefits can be even wider for those who are in great need, and the meat can be distributed to prevent stunting and malnutrition.

To Muhammadiyah members, he urged them to implement the decision of the Majelis Tarjih and Tajdid regarding qurbani slaughter in Indonesia. “No need to hesitate, because the result of the ijtihad of these scholars states that qurbani slaughtered in Indonesia is permissible and is based on naqliyah arguments, namely the preferred evidences, and Insya Allah, the result of this ijtihad cannot be annulled or annul other ijtihads, so their positions are equally respected. Insya Allah, all of it provides benefits and all have arguments from religious sources,” explained Ustaz Ziyad.

At the same venue, the Secretary of the Hajj and Umrah Development Institute (LPHU) of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership, Ustaz Marzuki, said that slaughtering qurbani in the homeland or in Indonesia brings goodness to the Indonesian nation. Qurbani meat that is distributed well and on target can help the government in efforts to equalise nutrition nationally.

“Qurbani slaughtered in Indonesia can help efforts to equalise nutrition nationally because it is channelled on target,” said Ustaz Marzuki.
