Muhammadiyah Condemns Israel's Occupation of Indonesian Hospital in Gaza: An Inhumane Action
GAZA – The Chairman of Muhammadiyah’s Central Leadership (PP), Buya Anwar Abbas, has strongly condemned the provocative and intimidatory actions of Israeli soldiers who have taken control of the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza and placed military symbols in the area.
According to Buya Anwar, these actions further demonstrate a serious violation of humanitarian values, especially since the targeted facility is a hospital built with funds from the Indonesian public.
“Muhammadiyah strongly condemns the attitude and actions of the Israeli soldiers, which are provocative and intimidatory, by erecting banners reading ‘Rising Lion’ and using military symbols on the ruins of the Indonesian Hospital that they have destroyed,” said Buya Anwar when contacted by Republika.co.id on Thursday (23/4/2026).
He emphasised that the Indonesian Hospital is a symbol of humanity that should be protected under any circumstances, including in situations of armed conflict.
Buya Anwar revealed that Israel’s repeated attacks on the hospital, which number in the hundreds, indicate a total disregard for the principle of protecting civilian facilities.
“Hospitals are symbols of humanity that must be safeguarded and protected. Therefore, Israel’s actions are clearly intolerable and must be condemned,” said this Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).
Furthermore, he assessed that Israel’s steps are not only inhumane but also show indifference to the suffering of Gaza’s civilians who need healthcare services.
“This action shows no respect whatsoever for civilian facilities intended for healthcare services for the sick, injured, and needy people of Gaza,” he stated.
