Muhammadiyah Chief: Press Criticism Not a Threat, Elites Must Be Open

Muhammadiyah Chairman Haedar Nashir has stressed that criticism from the mass media should not be seen as a threat, but rather as essential input for improving the nation. He called on government officials and state institutions to be open to media scrutiny.

Speaking at a national oration for the Muhammadiyah Press and Literacy Day in Jakarta on Thursday, Haedar highlighted the noble role of journalism in presenting truthful, balanced information that guides public life. He noted that the profession becomes increasingly complex as the media industry intersects with political interests, but expressed optimism that journalists can overcome these challenges with intelligence and professionalism.

“I am confident that the executive, legislative, judiciary, and other state institutions always need information, input, and criticism from the mass media,” Haedar said. He added that a nation progresses through criticism and diverse information, urging elites to build an ecosystem of openness.

While advocating for press freedom, Haedar also reminded journalists to uphold ethics and prioritise the national interest. He stated that criticism from civil society organisations, academia, and the press should be viewed as a collective effort to advance Indonesia, not as a threat to any institution.
