Muhammadiyah Chief Demands Zero Tolerance for Sexual Harassment at UAD and UMY

Muhammadiyah Central Chairman Haedar Nashir has urged that there be no compromise in handling cases of alleged sexual harassment at two Muhammadiyah universities, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) and Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY). He stressed that the cases must be taken seriously.

“I hear and believe this is the rector’s domain, and they are taking serious and very serious steps. I hope and request that these serious steps be followed up with firm, uncompromising actions,” Haedar said at the Prime UMY Hotel Convention & Dormitory, Bantul, on Tuesday.

Haedar emphasised that sexual harassment is a matter of ethics and public space that must not be tolerated. “This is a realm of ethics, morality, and public space where we hope no room is given to demoralising acts, including narcotics and other issues that must become a commitment for all educational institutions in Indonesia,” he stated.

The cases involve a lecturer at UMY who has been suspended following allegations of sexual harassment, and a student at UAD accused of harassing two female students during a community service programme (KKN). Both universities have confirmed that internal task forces are processing the reports in accordance with established procedures.
