Muhammadiyah Central Leadership Urges Members to Perform Haji Dam Sacrifice in Indonesia
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah, through the Hajj and Umrah Development Institute (LPHU), has urged members of the organisation who are prospective Hajj pilgrims for 2026 to perform the animal sacrifice for Dam in the homeland.
“An appeal to members of the organisation that the Tarjih Council of the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah has issued a decision based on its ijtihad. Therefore, let us implement this ijtihad. There is no need to hesitate,” said the Chairman of the LPHU of the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah, Muhammad Ziyad, at the Muhammadiyah Dakwah Building in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Ziyad explained that there are three main conditions that form the basis for the permissibility of transferring the Dam sacrifice slaughter.
First, if the slaughter in the Holy Land has the potential to cause environmental pollution. He described the large number of animals slaughtered during the Hajj season, which can reach millions, thus potentially contaminating water and air.
“The Saudi Arabian government would be grateful if the slaughter is carried out in Indonesia. Because there, issues of environmental pollution arise,” said Ziyad.
Second, there is the risk of losing the benefits from the Dam animal. In several cases, according to him, there are practices of slaughter that are not followed by optimal utilisation of the meat, so the potential benefits are wasted.
In fact, the Quran states that the Hajj Dam has the function of qiyaman lin-nas (sustaining human life), including in meeting nutritional needs, especially animal protein.
Third, this permissibility applies if in the country of origin, such as Indonesia, there is still poverty and unmet nutritional needs of the community. In such conditions, the distribution of Dam meat is deemed more beneficial if done in the homeland.
He explained that this fatwa is based on evidence from the Quran, particularly Surah Al-Hajj verse 36, which commands that the meat of the sacrificial animal be eaten and shared with those in need, both those who ask and those who do not.
According to him, that verse indicates an illat (legal reason), namely fulfilling the consumption needs of Hajj pilgrims and the surrounding community.
However, the current conditions have changed. The consumption needs of Hajj pilgrims have been fulfilled through catering services and facilities from the government, so that legal reason is no longer fully relevant.
“There is no need to hesitate, because the result of the ijtihad of these scholars. We say that slaughtering in Indonesia is valid and it is based on nakliah argumentation, namely strong evidences understood by our scholars. Insya Allah, the result of this ijtihad cannot be annulled or annul other ijtihads,” said Ziyad.
