Muhammadiyah Bali Issues Decree for Home-Based Takbiran During Nyepi
The Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership (PWM) in Bali has issued a decree requesting that Muhammadiyah residents in Bali carry out takbiran ahead of Eid al-Fitr at their respective homes. This is because this year’s Lebaran celebration coincides with Nyepi Day.
PWM Bali Chairman Husnul Fahmi explained that, in fact, the outcome of a meeting with the Bali Inter-Religious Harmony Forum (FKUB) and the Bali Governor decided that Muslims, particularly Muhammadiyah, are permitted to perform takbiran at mosques on Thursday, 19 March 2026. However, to maintain tolerance and harmony in Bali, the decision for takbiran at each home was chosen and received a positive response from Muhammadiyah residents.
“This is also guidance from the central leadership, because if takbiran is not possible, we are advised to carry it out at each home, so we issued a decree for takbiran at home,” said Fahmi in Bali on Wednesday, 18 March 2026.
Through its decree, PWM Bali hopes that all Muhammadiyah residents will follow this guidance, although some districts have their own policies, such as in Jembrana and Buleleng, which do permit it, so they are urged to proceed according to the rules.
“We have conveyed this to the community, also shared the decree on social media a week ago, and it was accepted by the public that takbiran will be carried out at home, and two days ago we met with the Bali Governor and conveyed that agreement,” Fahmi stated.
In Bali, Muhammadiyah residents typically do not celebrate the night before Eid al-Fitr with roaming takbir or vehicle convoys. They tend to celebrate the victory after fasting Ramadan with takbiran at mosques or mushallas, but with only the addition of loudspeakers.
Fahmi conveyed that the step to urge takbiran at each home is not an issue, as in Bali, relations between Muslims, particularly Muhammadiyah, and Hindus have been well-established for a long time.
In fact, Muslim activities are often assisted, such as during tarawih prayers guarded by pecalang, and there have been instances of Friday prayers coinciding with Nyepi, where worshippers were escorted to mushallas or mosques.
“Indeed, Nyepi Day and Eid al-Fitr or takbiran night have never been this close or coinciding, but previously Friday prayers have coincided and we could still pray, even escorted, so our harmony is very well maintained,” he said.
