Muhammadiyah Announces Eid al-Fitr Falls on Friday, Urges Mutual Respect

Muhammadiyah’s Central Leadership (PP) announced that Eid al-Fitr for the year 1447 Hijri will fall on Friday, 20 March 2026. Chairman of the Central Leadership Haedar Nashir reiterated the importance of mutual respect.

The determination of Eid al-Fitr this year could potentially differ between Muhammadiyah and the government. The government itself will only hold an isbat session on Thursday, 19 March.

“On behalf of Muhammadiyah’s Central Leadership, we announce that Eid al-Fitr on 1 Syawal 1447 Hijri will fall on Friday, 20 March 2026,” Haedar said at Muhammadiyah’s Central Leadership office in Yogyakarta on Monday, 16 March 2026.

“In the event of a difference in Eid al-Fitr, we respect and request mutual respect,” Haedar said.

Despite the potential for differing dates in determining Eid al-Fitr, Haedar requested that this should not be an issue if the determination differs. He expressed hope that public spaces would still be able to hold Eid prayers even if celebrated on different days.

“And all public spaces should be made available for Eid al-Fitr celebrations, both for Muhammadiyah and Muslim citizens who may observe their prayers on different dates,” Haedar explained.

“More importantly, let us make Eid al-Fitr, in both our unity and differences, an opportunity to implement sources of religious enlightenment in our lives,” he added.

Haedar also called on Muhammadiyah members in Bali to uphold tolerance by refraining from takbir celebrations processions. This is to respect the Nyepi festival celebrations.

“Specifically for Muhammadiyah members and mosque leaders in Bali, in the spirit of tolerance, please refrain from takbir processions or takbir using loudspeakers. If you wish, takbir can be performed in your homes instead,” Haedar urged.
