YOGYAKARTA: Muhamadiyah, a Moslem social and educational organization, will focus on its working programs at its upcoming congress, rather than on the election of the new leadership.
Muhamadiyah's deputy chairman, Ahmad Syafii Maarif, said yesterday he was optimistic that Muhamadiyah's congress in Banda Aceh in July would not get bogged down in debates over the organization's leadership.
"There will be no difficulty in the election of executive board members for the 1995-2000 period because we have a lot of good cadres," Syafii was quoted by Antara as saying.
Muhammadiyah is currently led by Amien Rais, who was appointed in the middle of last year. He replaced Azhar Basyir who died earlier last year.
Syafii said the July meeting will finalize the organization's working programs for the coming five years.(imn)
