Muhaimin: Social security for domestic workers is a basic right
Social security for domestic workers is a right, not an option. The state is obliged to ensure that every PRT receives protection, both in terms of health insurance and employment safeguards.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar has stressed that social security for domestic workers (PRT) is a basic right that the state must fulfil.
“Social security for domestic workers is a right, not an option. The state is obliged to ensure that every PRT receives protection, both in terms of health insurance and employment safeguards,” Muhaimin said in Jakarta on Wednesday.
According to him, the ratification of the Domestic Workers Protection Law (UU PPRT) serves as an important milestone in delivering comprehensive legal protection while providing certainty for both workers and employers.
He noted that domestic workers have long been in a vulnerable position, prone to discrimination, exploitation, and violence, making the law a concrete step to improve their conditions.
Therefore, the government will ensure that PRT are protected through BPJS Kesehatan and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan.
He added that the regulation also opens opportunities for domestic workers to obtain old-age security up to pension benefits.
“With state funding support, there is no reason for domestic workers not to be protected. This represents the state’s presence for vulnerable groups,” he stated.
Previously, the 17th Plenary Session of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) for the IV Session Period of 2025–2026 on Tuesday (21/4) approved the Domestic Workers Protection Bill (RUU PPRT) as law, coinciding with Kartini Day commemorations.
