Muhadjir Effendy Summoned by KPK as Witness in Hajj Case, Requests Rescheduling
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has summoned the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Muhadjir Effendy, as a witness in the Hajj quota corruption case. Muhadjir is being questioned in his capacity as the ad interim Minister of Religious Affairs in 2022.
“In the follow-up investigation of the case related to the Hajj quota, investigators have scheduled an examination of witness MHJ in his role as the ad interim Minister of Religious Affairs in 2022,” stated KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo to journalists on Monday (18/05/2026).
However, Muhadjir has requested a postponement of the summons. The KPK investigators will reschedule the examination.
“The individual concerned has confirmed and requested a postponement of the examination. Investigators will reschedule the session,” he added.
The KPK has named four suspects in this Hajj corruption case:
Former Minister of Religious Affairs, Yaqut Cholil Qouames (YCQ)
Former Special Staff to the Minister, Ishfah Abidal Azis, also known as Gus Alex (IAA)
Operational Director of PT Makassar Toraja (Maktour), Ismail Adham (ISM)
Chairperson of the Kesthuri Association, Asrul Azis Taba (ASR).
The KPK suspects that Ismail and Asrul provided funds to Yaqut in his capacity as the former Minister of Religious Affairs. The payment was allegedly facilitated through an intermediary, Yaqut’s former special staff, Gus Alex.
Ismail is alleged to have provided USD 30,000 to Gus Alex. Furthermore, Ismail reportedly handed over USD 5,000 to the former Director General of Hajj and Umrah Organising Services at the Ministry of Religious Affairs in 2024, Hilman Latief (HL).
The KPK estimates that the state losses in this case amount to IDR 622 billion, based on calculations provided by the Audit Board of Indonesia (BPK).
