Mugger beaten by mob in Cengkareng after targeting elderly victim
A mugger identified by the initial F was left battered and bruised after being attacked by a mob in the Gotong Royong Road area of Kapuk, Cengkareng, West Jakarta. The suspect had used the pretext of asking for directions to target his victim.
Kanit Reskrim of Cengkareng Police, AKP Parman Gultom, stated that the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon around 2:00 p.m. Western Indonesia Time. It began when two perpetrators tailed the elderly victim. “The perpetrator initially pretended to ask for an address. The victim then stopped and explained the direction to Daan Mogot,” Gultom said when contacted in Jakarta on Thursday.
As soon as the victim finished giving directions and placed his mobile phone into his shirt pocket, one of the perpetrators immediately snatched the device. After the theft, both perpetrators attempted to flee. However, the suspect known as F inadvertently ran into a dead-end street.
The victim, who was still on his motorcycle, shouted for help from local residents. “Residents who heard the victim’s cries immediately helped chase and secure the perpetrator,” Gultom stated. Meanwhile, the other perpetrator managed to escape the scene. Police have identified the fugitive and are currently in pursuit.
“The perpetrator claims this was his first time committing such an act, but we are still investigating his confession,” he added. In a viral video uploaded by the Instagram account @jakartabarat24jam, a number of enraged residents are seen crowding around the captured mugger. At times, residents can be seen throwing punches and kicks at the suspect.
