Students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Jogja (Muga) have innovated an electric drag motorcycle. The bike, named Mugatech, achieved a top speed of 132.5 km/h in tests. Hendro Harimawan, head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, said Mugatech began design last year with XI and XII grade students involved in the project.

‘Some of our students enjoy customizing motorcycles, so the idea drew attention, and the students were enthusiastic,’ he said at SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Jogja on Tuesday 19 May 2026.

‘We started a year ago; we studied existing designs and then adapted them. Our own design.’

Mugatech runs a belt/automatic system with three gears. For the motorcycle components, some parts were made by students; others used conventional motorcycle components adapted to fit.

For the frame, the iron frame was designed and assembled by students; it was not immediately ready and underwent several evaluations to reach a proportional frame.

‘Some components also come from market motorcycles, such as the front shock from Satria FU, the wheels from Jupiter Z, the rear shock from Jupiter MX King, and the swingarm from MX King but modified. So it’s not a simple bolt-on; it’s tailored to the design’s needs.’

Next, for the drive engine, according to Hendro, they bought a complete electric motor with its battery. The motor and battery form the basis of Mugatech’s design. In other words, the bike’s current shape follows the size of the machine and battery.

‘So we are using a 4,000-watt electric motor, 72.5 volts, and a 72.5-volt 30 Ah battery. We made the frame as slim as possible; it is not too heavy. Although the electrical components themselves are heavy.’

‘For example, the battery weighs about 10 to 15 kilograms by itself, and the motor also weighs around 15 kilograms. The heavy components are the electrical parts, so we kept the frame as slim as possible to help with speed,’ he added.

The Mugatech bike, weighing around 40 kilograms, cost around IDR 30 million to produce. After completion, test drives were conducted on the Depok Beach airstrip in Bantul to gauge Mugatech’s maximum capability.

The test track was 500 metres long. Hendro said Mugatech reached its top speed at a distance of 200 metres. That means the 0 to 200 metres covers the acceleration to top speed not the full 500 metres.

‘It reached 132.5 km/h. Yes, but not instantly; the speed climb from 0 to 132 km/h occurs over the 0 to 200 metre stretch, not at the 500-m mark,’ Hendro explained.

He noted that the speed of this electric motorcycle depends on battery power. Still, SMK Muhammadiyah 3 will continue developing Mugatech to achieve its best performance.

‘From what we’ve learned, when the power is fully charged (100%), it can be very fast indeed. However, as it is used and power drains, the speed gradually declines. It’s not like a petrol motorcycle,’ he said.

‘It can go faster with changes to the gear ratio on the front and rear; God willing, it will go faster,’ he added.

One student involved, Muhammad Rizki Saputra, said he was satisfied with the team’s achievement, though they plan to keep refining Mugatech.

‘From my perspective, when I tested it, I think the electric motorcycle is adequate, though it still needs many revisions. The frame is perhaps too heavy; for drag racing, frames are typically lighter to reduce weight, and the battery may also need to be larger. It managed that speed when the battery was full, which is the best we had so far,’ he concluded.
