Mudik Peak Reaches 270,000 Vehicles, Kakorlantas: Traffic Engineering Helps Keep Situation Under Control
The Head of the Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps (Kakorlantas), Inspector General of Police Drs Agus Suryonugroho SH, M.Hum, described the traffic conditions following the implementation of the national one-way traffic engineering as monitored and under control. Kakorlantas stated that the national one-way system is still in effect to anticipate the high volume of vehicles. He mentioned that his position was under the MBZ on the toll road, and the traffic flow after the implementation of the national one-way for the return flow yesterday, 18th, until now, still applies the national one-way. “Regarding the traffic conditions, especially on the toll road, we are also observing the impact on arterial roads. Up to now, it is quite under control,” said Kakorlantas at the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road on Thursday afternoon (19/3/2026). Based on data for Thursday (19/3/2026), the number of vehicles at the peak flow reached around 270,000 vehicles. This figure increased by about 4.26% compared to the same period last year, which recorded 258,000 vehicles. Therefore, he explained, the traffic engineering mechanism from kilometre 36 has already implemented contraflow on one lane up to km 47. After there was still more traffic generation, from km 47 it was extended to km 48, that is two lanes. “From km 48, we created another contraflow on three lanes up to km 70. Up to km 70, of course, towards Trans Java, alhamdulillah, it is smooth because we have implemented the national one-way. That is the latest condition today,” he stated. In that process, Agus explained that the Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed (MBZ) elevated toll road was temporarily closed for approximately one and a half hours to support the implementation of contraflow. After the engineering was completed, the route was reopened, and traffic gradually became smooth. “(The) MBZ was closed earlier today (Thursday 19 March 2026) for almost one and a half hours. Because the contraflow measures have been completed, of course, we reopen it, and alhamdulillah, now it is smooth. It is already smooth,” Agus revealed. On the other hand, the number of traffic accidents was recorded to have decreased significantly by 2.8%. Meanwhile, the fatality rate of victims who died fell significantly by up to 40% compared to the previous year. “We convey that traffic accident incidents have also decreased by 2.8% as of today (Thursday 19 March 2026). But the fatality of victims who died has dropped by 40%. So it’s still good, hopefully until the end of Operation Ketupat we can maintain it,” he said. He hoped that mudik travellers would be careful and patient. “The peak flow has been passed, just a few percent left for us to secure,” he concluded.
