The annual procession commemorating the Islamic New Year 1 Muharram 1448 H, or the Javanese New Year 1 Sura Be-1960, known as Lampah Budaya Mubeng Beteng, will once again be held by the Abdi Dalem Paguyuban of the Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat. The event is scheduled for 16 June, on Wednesday night.

Mubeng Beteng is a tradition of walking in silence around the Keraton Yogyakarta’s fortress walls, conducted in a calm, orderly, and solemn atmosphere. The procession is facilitated directly by the Yogyakarta Special Region Cultural Office and is open to the general public.

Head of the DIY Cultural Office, Dian Lakshmi Pratiwi, explained that this activity is not a Hajad Dalem, or a palace ceremony, but rather a Hajad Kawula Dalem, an event initiated and carried out by the royal servants themselves. ‘It is a manifestation of a cultural practice passed down through generations,’ she stated in a written release received by detikJogja on Friday (12/6/2026).

In Javanese philosophy, the silent cultural walk (tapa bisu) is not merely a physical activity but a means of introspection on one’s life journey over the past year. It involves self-restraint and prayers to God Almighty, seeking safety, peace, and blessings for the year ahead.

The Lampah Budaya Mubeng Beteng will take place from Tuesday evening, 16 June 2026, into the early hours of Wednesday, 17 June 2026. ‘The event is free of charge, with no registration required, and open to all members of the public who wish to participate,’ Dian clarified.

The programme will begin at 18.00 WIB, with a macapatan session scheduled for 21.00 WIB. The procession will depart precisely at midnight, marked by the sounding of a bell twelve times.

To ensure the event runs smoothly and maintains its solemn atmosphere, participants are requested to follow the organisers’ rules: dress modestly and neatly, refrain from bringing attributes of any organisation, community, institution, or political party, and maintain order and cleanliness.

The route for this year’s silent cultural walk is scheduled to follow the traditional path along the Keraton’s fortress architecture. The start and finish point is Kagungan Dalem (KgD) Kamandungan Lor (Keben), proceeding along Jalan Rotowijayan, Jalan Pekapalan, Jalan Kauman, Jalan KH. Ahmad Dahlan (Agus Salim), Jalan KH. Wahid Hasyim, Jalan MT. Haryono, Jalan Mayjend Sutoyo, Jalan Brigjend Katamso, Jalan Ibu Ruswa, Jalan Pekapalan Alun-alun Utara, and Jalan Rotowijayan, before returning to KgD Kamandungan Lor (Keben).
