The Mubeng Beteng Jogja tradition, held every 1 Suro night, or Javanese New Year, will be held again. The Culture Office of the Special Region of Yogyakarta has announced the schedule, route, and requirements for participants wishing to join.

According to the book ‘Filsafat Jawa: Menguak Filosofi, Laku Hidup, dan Ajaran Leluhur Jawa’ by Sri Wintala Achmad, Mubeng Beteng is essentially an activity of walking around the Yogyakarta Palace fortifications. While walking, participants also perform Tapa Bisu.

Tapa Bisu is the custom of not speaking to one another. The aim is to lock the five senses so that the sixth sense can focus on God Almighty. In that silent moment, Mubeng Beteng participants draw closer to the Ruler of the Universe.

Mubeng Beteng 2026 will be held on Tuesday night, 16 June 2026, until the early hours of Wednesday, 17 June 2026. The moment coincides with the change of the Javanese year from 1959 Dal to 1960 Ba’.

After preparation, participants begin walking. The route passes through the following streets:

  • Jalan Suryowijayan

  • Jalan MT Haryono

The tradition, organised by the Paguyuban Abdi Dalem Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat with facilities from the DIY Culture Office, is free. The public does not need to pay any fee to participate. Additionally, participants do not need to register beforehand; they simply need to arrive at Kagungan Dalem Kamandungan Lor at the appropriate time.

‘This activity is free, there is no registration, and it is open without charge for the general public who wish to participate,’ explained the Head of the DIY Culture Office, Dian Lakshmi Pratiwi.
