MTs Student in Pati Allegedly Loses Two Fingers Due to Bullying
A seventh-grade student at Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) Islam Wangunrejo in Margorejo, Pati Regency, identified as AF (13), has suffered serious injuries, resulting in the loss of the ring and index fingers on his left hand. The incident has sparked allegations of bullying by older students, though the school administration claims the injury was an accident.
According to the victim’s cousin, Sahlatina, the incident occurred during the School Environment Introduction Period (MPLS) on 27 July. She alleges that three ninth-grade students assaulted AF, striking him in the head and dragging him into a bathroom. The attackers reportedly doused him with water and prevented him from leaving, forcing the student to climb a metal fence to escape. During the attempt to climb, his hand became trapped in the fence, leading to the amputation of two fingers.
The victim’s family initially hesitated to speak out due to fear, but after receiving medical treatment, they decided to report the case to the police to ensure the perpetrators are held accountable. The family has rejected mediation attempts by the school.
Conversely, the Headmaster of MTs Islam Wangunrejo, Safi’i, denied the bullying allegations, asserting that the incident was purely accidental. He claimed the student’s hand became trapped in the school fence after he climbed it following the midday prayer. Safi’i stated that he and several witnesses accompanied the student to the hospital.
Legal counsel for the victim, Catur Andi Cahyanto from LBH Garda Muda Nusantara Pati Branch, confirmed that a formal report was filed with the Pati Police on 1 August. He expressed hope for a swift and transparent investigation into the matter.
