Mt. Soputan spews ashes

MANADO, North Sulawesi: Mt. Soputan in the Minahasa regency
spewed ashes and sand across a radius of 15 kilometers on
Wednesday, Antara reported.

Regent Karel Senduk said small eruptions of the 1,820-meter
volcano occurred frequently and that the volcano was showing
signs of greater activity.

People living in the surrounding Tombatu and Ratahan districts
did not seem to be disturbed by the development, but the regent
asked them to stay on alert.

"We are monitoring the volcano's activities," Senduk said.
