PT Pertamina Patra Niaga is operating various tanker vessels to strengthen the distribution of fuel oil (BBM) throughout all regions of Indonesia, including the MT Pertamina Halmahera. The MT Pertamina Halmahera is a Suezmax-class tanker capable of transporting up to 160,000 kilolitres (KL) of fuel in a single voyage.

Arif Yunianto, Director of Logistics Fleet at PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, stated that large-capacity tankers play a strategic role in ensuring the smooth distribution of national energy. The MT Pertamina Halmahera has a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of approximately 100,000 to 160,000 tonnes and a length overall (LOA) of about 240 metres. The vessel is designed to transport various types of fuel in a single voyage through a segregated cargo tank system. Additionally, the ship is equipped with safety technologies, such as an inert gas system and a cargo monitoring system, to ensure safe and reliable operations.

In terms of scale, the vessel is comparable to more than two football pitches or approximately 60 to 70 cars lined up. In its operations, the ship distributes fuel to various energy terminals across Sumatra, Java, and Eastern Indonesia. The name ‘Halmahera’ was taken from one of the large islands in Eastern Indonesia, representing inter-island connectivity and the strategic role of Indonesia’s maritime region. This naming reflects the ship’s function as a link for energy distribution to various parts of the archipelago.

Arif added that, as an archipelagic nation, Indonesia’s energy distribution is highly dependent on sea transport routes. Therefore, large-capacity tankers serve an essential role as connectors between energy terminals and various distribution destinations throughout Indonesia. He also ensured that Pertamina Patra Niaga will continue to strengthen the reliability of its maritime fleet as part of the effort to maintain national energy security. “We are committed to ensuring that energy distribution runs safely, on time, and reaches all regions of Indonesia,” he said.
