Mt Krakatau spews ashes

BANDUNG, West Java: Mount Krakatau in the Sunda straits still
spews volcanic ashes 200 to 300 times a day, an official said
Saturday.

Head of the agency monitoring activities of volcanoes in
Sumatra and West Java, Igan Supriatman Sutawidjaja, said that the
frequent small explosions would not, however, amount to a major
explosion anytime soon.

"A major explosion occurred in 1992 and will not likely happen
again in the foreseeable future", Igan was quoted by the Antara
news agency as saying.

He noted that Krakatau was inactive from October 1993 to March
