MT Haryono Road Riddled with Potholes, Frequently Causing Motorcycle Accidents

Jakarta – A video posted by resident Fadhil Machmud documents the hazardous condition of MT Haryono Road towards Gatot Subroto in South Jakarta, where multiple potholes have caused motorcycle accidents. In his Instagram post, Machmud noted that the road damage resulted in several riders falling during heavy rainfall, with approximately five people injured in an incident that occurred around 2:00 AM. Machmud assisted several affected motorcyclists in reaching hospital care.

Kompas.com’s field survey confirmed potholes on the right side of the road in the fast lane heading towards Gatot Subroto, varying in size. White lines and cross markings have been painted to warn drivers, though the left side of the road also displays uneven asphalt surfaces, faded green bicycle lane markings, and additional potholes along the roadside.

According to local residents, such road damage occurs frequently on this route. Amin, a 39-year-old street coffee vendor, reported regularly witnessing motorcycle accidents caused by potholes, particularly at night when lighting is inadequate. Despite warning markings, the high speed of vehicles in the fast lane often means drivers fail to notice the hazards in time. Online motorcycle taxi driver Dedi, 40, explained that potholes are often obscured when motorcycles travel behind larger vehicles, forcing riders to make sudden manoeuvres to avoid them – manoeuvres that frequently result in collisions.
