Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are a sector that plays an important role in the Indonesian economy. As a pillar of the people’s economy, MSMEs are able to absorb a large workforce, increase people’s incomes, and drive economic growth in various regions. The existence of MSMEs not only helps reduce unemployment but also serves as a primary driver of the local economy through the utilisation of available resources in the surrounding environment.

In the modern era marked by digital technology development, MSMEs face significant challenges and opportunities. Changes in consumer behaviour, which increasingly rely on technology, require MSME players to adapt by utilising digital platforms for marketing, transactions, and product promotion. Through social media, marketplaces, and digital payment systems, MSMEs can reach wider markets without incurring large operational costs.

Beyond contributing to national economic growth, MSMEs also play a role in creating economic equality. Many people in rural and urban areas earn income from small-scale business activities, such as trade, culinary ventures, crafts, agriculture, and services. With the growth of MSMEs, people’s incomes increase, allowing economic welfare to be more evenly distributed.

Nevertheless, MSME players still face various obstacles, such as limited capital, low human resource quality, lack of product innovation, and insufficient ability to utilise digital technology. Competition with imported products and large corporations also poses a challenge that must be addressed. Therefore, support from the government, financial institutions, universities, and the community is needed in the form of training, mentoring, easier access to financing, and market expansion.

The government has launched various programmes to support MSME development, including capital assistance, entrepreneurship training, MSME digitalisation, and business licensing simplification. This support is expected to enhance the competitiveness of MSMEs so they can grow into more productive, innovative, and sustainable enterprises. With the various contributions they make, MSMEs remain a vital foundation in Indonesia’s economic development in the modern era. Strengthening the MSME sector through improved human resource quality, innovation, technology utilisation, and collaboration between the government and the community will create a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable economy, providing greater benefits for public welfare.
