MSMEs Adopt Smart Packaging to Expand Sales
The digitalisation of MSMEs is not only taking place through social media and e-commerce platforms, but is also being applied to product packaging. Packaging with QR codes can connect physical products with business information and digital sales channels.
This approach is being implemented in a community service programme involving YARSI University and Krisnadwipayana University, supported by BIMA Kemendiktisaintek 2026 funding. The programme targets the NaminaSang Farm community group in Mandalamekar Village, Bandung Regency.
The eight-month programme involves lecturers and students from multiple study programmes. Activities combine information technology development, product packaging and digital marketing to help MSMEs expand their sales channels.
YARSI University community service team leader Rini Hidayati said applying QR codes to packaging can expand the function of packaging from merely protecting products to becoming an information medium as well as a gateway to digital channels.
Through smart packaging integrated with QR codes, packaging is not only a product identity but can also serve as an entry point to digital information and the partner’s marketing channels, Rini said on Saturday (15/8/2026).
The initial stage of the programme focused on creating packaging integrated with QR codes. Partners received training on the concept of digital packaging and how to link the codes with product information.
The next stage included training on creating QR codes and managing digital information. The information displayed can include product profiles, business profiles and other information needed by consumers.
In the third stage, the QR codes on packaging were linked to the partner’s e-commerce site. With this system, consumers who scan the code can move from product information on the packaging to the digital channel where the product is offered.
The programme also involves students in technology development, digital information management, packaging and e-commerce-based marketing. This cross-disciplinary involvement is part of the process of applying university knowledge to business needs in the community.
For MSMEs, the use of QR codes on packaging can open direct communication channels with consumers without having to turn physical products into mere promotional media. Information connected through the codes can also be updated via digital channels.
The programme will next enter a monitoring and evaluation phase until the end of December 2026 to assess the application of the technology and the sustainability of its use by partners.
The application of technology to packaging shows that MSME digitalisation can begin at the point of interaction directly encountered by consumers. The challenge is ensuring the technology is used consistently and delivers benefits for business activities.
