Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) Maman Abdurrahman has said that the Presidential Regulation (Perpres) on the Digital Transport Ecosystem can provide economic benefits to online motorcycle taxi drivers, known as ojol.

“God willing, when the Perpres is issued, hopefully it will serve as a positive step or positive intention from the government to truly encourage and provide the widest possible opportunity for the online transport ecosystem so that it can grow and be sustainable in the future,” Maman said in his remarks delivered online in Jakarta on Tuesday.

“This Perpres can also provide economic benefits to all parties, especially of course for our online motorcycle taxi friends across the country,” he added.

According to him, the Perpres will provide a policy and regulatory framework whose basic principle is to keep the ecosystem healthy.

Maman said this is a positive step, and that the government, based on the direction of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, has always emphasised finding ways to help ojol drivers advance further in the future, not only carrying out business activities as ojol drivers but also gaining opportunities to open businesses in other sectors.

“Because in principle, our ojol friends have very flexible working hours. So I think that besides driving for ojol, they can also open business spaces and other business activities,” he said.

The Ministry of MSMEs has also spoken with platform management, and going forward will prepare a number of programme instruments or policy measures that can encourage, develop and improve the welfare of ojol drivers across the country.
