KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian police are investigating whether
contract killers murdered a state assemblyman in broad daylight,
reports said Sunday.
Joe Fernandez, 54, died in hospital on Saturday after being
shot three times by two men on a motorbike who pulled alongside
his vehicle at Bukit Mertajam in the northern state of Penang.
Fernandez, a doctor by profession, was a member of the
Malaysian Indian Congress party and represented Lunas in the
neighboring state of Kedah.
Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad expressed sadness and shock
over the killing.
National Police chief Norian Mai, quoted by newspapers and the
official Bernama news agency, said police would investigate
whether hitmen had been hired.
