MSF: Ebola Outbreak in DRC 'Extremely Concerning'
Moscow (ANTARA) — The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is ‘extremely concerning’, said Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) Operations Deputy Director Alan Gonzalez on Saturday, 30 May. “Two weeks after the announcement of the Ebola outbreak in Ituri Province, the situation is extremely concerning and a real source of anxiety for the public and frontline health workers,” he stated. According to him, the speed of Ebola’s spread is unprecedented, and those on the ground are unable to keep up. New suspected Ebola cases are being reported daily, but slow testing processes are hindering timely diagnosis. Testing capacity must be urgently increased to at least partially control the situation, he added. The statement was made during the high-level visit of World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to Ituri. WHO has declared the Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. He noted that over 900 suspected Ebola cases have been reported in the DRC, including 223 deaths suspected to be caused by the disease. The previous Ebola outbreak in the DRC ended in October 2025.
