MSC: Safeguarding Indonesia's Seas Ensures Sustainable Benefits for Future Generations

Bogor (ANTARA) - Interpreting the meaning of independence involves ensuring that Indonesia’s marine wealth not only provides benefits today but also remains productive for the environment and future generations.

MSC Programme Director Hirmen Sofyanto stated that safeguarding the sea is about more than just protecting fish stocks; it is intrinsically linked to securing livelihoods, food security, the economy, and the future of Indonesian society.

“At this moment of the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia, we must consider how to keep Indonesia’s seas productive and beneficial for generations to come,” Hirmen said in Bogor, West Java, on Thursday.

He noted that as an archipelagic nation, Indonesia possesses extraordinary marine resources. For coastal communities and fisheries stakeholders, the sea is a vital source of food, employment, and economic activity.

Hirmen added that Indonesia’s waters hold significant potential to further enhance fisheries sustainability. As a global organisation, the MSC seeks to be part of Indonesia’s journey by supporting fisheries in improving their sustainability, building the capacity of industry players, and opening access to global markets.

“At the same time, we are also introducing sustainable seafood choices to Indonesian consumers,” he concluded.
