MRT Jakarta Now Accepts Direct Credit Card Payments
PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) has officially launched a contactless EMV payment system, enabling passengers to travel without needing to purchase a special card or top up a balance. The launch took place at Bundaran HI MRT Station in Central Jakarta on Wednesday (29/7/2026). Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the implementation of contactless credit card payments on the MRT Jakarta is the first of its kind for a transportation service in Indonesia. “Today, the ticket payment system using contactless credit cards, or EMV Contactless, is launched on MRT Jakarta, and this is the first time in Indonesia that a credit card is used,” Pramono said during the launch event. With this new system, both residents and foreign tourists can simply tap in and tap out using their credit cards when using MRT Jakarta services. Passengers no longer need to have a special MRT card or top up an electronic money card beforehand. The system accepts credit cards bearing the Visa and Mastercard logos. EMV stands for Europay, Mastercard, and Visa, the three companies that pioneered the global security standard for chip-based payment cards, including credit and debit cards. Pramono explained that the system provides a more practical payment option for MRT Jakarta passengers. Previously, users without certain payment methods had to use a special card to travel. “If they wanted to use the MRT, they had to use a special card. Now, with Visa and Mastercard accepted, they can use them directly,” Pramono clarified. Under this mechanism, passengers simply use a contactless credit card that supports the EMV system to transact when entering and exiting the station. The implementation of EMV Contactless payments is also seen as a way to make it easier for international tourists visiting Jakarta. Pramono noted that the ease of the transportation payment system is an important element in enhancing Jakarta’s competitiveness as a global city. He added that similar systems are already in use in a number of cities around the world.
