MR.DIY Launches Waste Station in the Heart of Jakarta's Public Transportation
PT Daya Intiguna Yasa Tbk (MDIY) has collaborated with Rekosistem to launch a Waste Station at Jakarta’s MRT Blok M station. This initiative serves as a concrete step in addressing environmental issues.
Coinciding with Earth Day 2026, the facility is not mere symbolism but a functional solution usable by visitors to the Blok M area and over 120,000 daily MRT passengers. MR.D.I.Y. Indonesia’s Chief Financial Officer, Rika Juniaty Tanzil, stated that environmental sustainability is the company’s long-term commitment.
“This Waste Station is a follow-up to the Recycle Dropbox now available in 52 stores in DKI Jakarta, West Java, and Banten. We aim to continue facilitating the public in sorting and managing waste responsibly, especially at high-mobility public points like MRT Blok M,” she explained in an official statement on Monday (27/4/2026).
Moreover, the launch of this Waste Station is not a standalone initiative but a continuation of MR.D.I.Y. Indonesia’s long journey in supporting a tangible and measurable waste management ecosystem through the environmental sustainability pillar of the “MR.D.I.Y. Untuk Indonesia” initiative.
According to data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, by the end of 2025, unmanaged waste in Indonesia reached 109,092 tonnes per day. Jakarta alone generates 7,100-8,000 tonnes of waste daily. In line with the government’s focus on promoting waste sorting from the source at the household level, the presence of a Waste Station in high-mobility public spaces becomes relevant and urgent.
The Waste Station, developed with Rekosistem, can accommodate up to 120-150 kg of inorganic waste per day. The public depositing sorted inorganic waste through this facility will receive reward points via the Rekosistem app, which can be redeemed for digital wallet balances, making waste sorting not only a responsible action but also beneficial.
Throughout 2025, MR.D.I.Y. Indonesia recorded several significant environmental achievements:
2,445 kg of waste collected from Recycle Dropbox in 52 stores (1,211 kg) and beach clean-up actions in Bulukumba with World Clean Up Day (1,234 kg)
84 tonnes of cardboard waste reused in logistics operations, reducing the need for new materials
10 waste banks strengthened in Jabodetabek, accompanied by training for dozens of their managers, in partnership with T.Care Foundation
300 tree saplings planted in Taman Hutan Raya Banten with Jejakin, to strengthen the forest’s function as a nature conservation area
Rika explained that what distinguishes this Waste Station from similar initiatives is its approach combining infrastructure, technology, and art. The unit’s design was created by Wulang Sunu, a visual artist from Yogyakarta, with motifs representing the three pillars of “MR.D.I.Y. Untuk Indonesia”: Women’s and Children’s Empowerment, Local Business Empowerment, and Environmental Sustainability.
The Waste Station is not only a solution for wise waste management; it is a visual statement of the company’s values in public spaces.
“Through this collaboration, we can reach the public at the most strategic points in Jakarta,” said Joshua Valentino, Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder of Rekosistem.
With an integrated system and relevant incentives, Rekosistem aims to prove that sorting waste from home can become a daily habit, not a burden. Meanwhile, Rommel PP Pasaribu, Head of Community Participation, Data, and Information Division of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, expressed that the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta appreciates MR.D.I.Y. Indonesia and Rekosistem for this Waste Station development initiative as a concrete example of multi-stakeholder collaboration in supporting the Waste Sorting from Source Movement.
“May this collaborative initiative serve as inspiration and a spark for other parties, both the private sector, industry players, and communities, to join the movement together,” he hoped.
In line with that, Muchamad Ikhsan Destian, Co-Founder of Pandawara Group—a youth community known for massive environmental clean-up actions across Indonesia—added a sharp perspective that waste is a mirror of habits.
“The change must start from there, from small things done consistently every day. When the right facilities are available in the right places, that change becomes much more possible,” he added.
Looking ahead, MR.D.I.Y. Indonesia affirms that the launch of the Waste Station at MRT Blok M is one point on a larger map. In the future, the company will continue to expand positive impacts through cross-sector collaborations encompassing environmental clean-up actions, waste management strengthening, and tree planting. These initiatives represent a tangible manifestation of the long-term commitment to Indonesia’s sustainability.
