MPR to Meet President Prabowo on Possible Amendment of the 1945 Constitution

The People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) of the Republic of Indonesia will meet President Prabowo Subianto to discuss the possible direction of amending the 1945 Constitution (UUD 1945) and the formulation of the Broad Outlines of State Policy (GBHN). MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani said the meeting is necessary to align views on several strategic constitutional agenda items currently being reviewed by the MPR. “Later we will meet with President Prabowo, including to discuss the GBHN and the amendment,” Muzani stated at the Constitutional Court building in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/7). He explained that the President has cautioned that discussions regarding constitutional changes must be conducted carefully and without haste. According to Muzani, the process must be based on public aspirations and involve all elements of the nation. “The President warned us about this amendment, so that we do not rush, continue to absorb public aspirations, and involve all elements,” he said. Muzani added that this spirit of openness encourages the MPR to continue dialogue with various state institutions, including the Constitutional Court (MK), to obtain comprehensive input regarding the direction of constitutional change. “In the context of involving all elements, we will also hold discussions with the Constitutional Court and so on,” he stated. Muzani also emphasised that amending the 1945 Constitution concerns the fundamental aspects of national, democratic, and constitutional life and must therefore be prepared thoroughly. For this reason, the MPR is opening space for discussion without rushing to make a decision. “Because the amendment is a matter of our life as a nation, a democracy, and a constitutional state. So we must be very careful. We are not closing the door tightly, although we are not opening this issue wide,” Muzani said.
