MPR Speaker Reminds Public Spaces Must Not Be Filled with Degrading Language

Jakarta (ANTARA) - People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Ahmad Muzani has reminded all parties that public spaces must not be allowed to be filled with language that degrades human dignity. “We should not let political differences destroy friendships, divide families, or sow hatred among fellow countrymen,” Muzani said during his introductory speech at the 2026 Annual Session of the MPR and the Joint Session of the DPR and DPD at the parliamentary complex, Jakarta, Friday. He therefore invited all parties to build a more civilised political culture, one that is firm in ideas but polite in delivery, steadfast in stance but open to deliberation, and courageous in criticism without losing respect for others. Muzani stated that Indonesia has chosen the path of democracy in managing differing aspirations and views. He noted that digital technology has now expanded the democratic space, allowing every citizen to express opinions, obtain information, and engage in public debate. “However, the same technology can also spread hatred, slander, manipulation, and false news at a speed we have never experienced before,” he said. He emphasised that while society may hold differing views, those differences should be conveyed with good character and language. Muzani added that democracy will not become stronger because people are increasingly harsh in their condemnation. “Democracy will be strong if freedom of speech is accompanied by responsibility, if the freedom to speak is delivered with argumentation, and if differences are not used as a reason for insult,” he concluded. The Annual Session of the MPR and the Joint Session of the DPR and DPD were held on Friday, featuring a speech by President Prabowo Subianto to deliver the performance report of state institutions and a state address in commemoration of the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia.
