Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani has emphasised that the spirit of unity must not be used as a tool to silence differing opinions. He stated that unity must be nurtured daily through justice, exemplary conduct, dialogue, and mutual trust. “Therefore, safeguarding unity means safeguarding justice,” Muzani said during his opening speech at the Annual Session of the MPR and the Joint Session of the DPR-DPD in the parliamentary complex, Jakarta, on Friday. He invoked Javanese philosophy, reminding all parties to adhere to the principles of Nglurug Tanpo Bolo, Sekti Tanpo Aji-aji, Sugih Tanpo Bondho, Menang Tanpo Ngasorake, which translates to fighting without a mob, being powerful without charms, being wealthy without material riches, and winning without humiliating or shaming others. Muzani reminded the audience that a true victory is not one that leaves wounds on fellow countrymen. He stated that genuine victory is one that preserves brotherhood, and does not insult, bully, or humiliate those with differing views. “This is the message we must uphold in our national and state life,” he said. He expressed hope that all parties would not allow the public sphere to be filled with language that degrades human dignity. Accordingly, he said, political differences should not be allowed to destroy friendships, divide families, or sow hatred among the nation’s children. The Annual Session of the MPR and the Joint Session of the DPR and DPD were held on Friday, featuring a speech by President Prabowo Subianto to deliver the performance report of state institutions and a state address for the 81st Anniversary of Indonesian Independence. In addition to the speech, the government also screened a video showcasing its performance achievements. The state event was held under the theme “A Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia”.
