MPR Speaker Dispatched by President to Attend Ali Khamenei's Funeral
People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Ahmad Muzani has stated he was ordered by President Prabowo Subianto to attend the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Gerindra Party Board of Trustees Secretary will depart alongside Gerindra Party Secretary-General Sugiono.
Muzani conveyed this via a post on his Instagram account @ahmadmuzani2 on Tuesday, 7 July 2026. “I, as the Speaker of the MPR RI, together with Foreign Minister Sugiono, have been dispatched by President Prabowo Subianto to attend the funeral procession of the late Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khamenei,” he said.
According to Muzani, their departure plans are still being finalised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Muzani and Sugiono are scheduled to depart for the city of Mashhad, Iran, on Thursday, 9 July 2025. Muzani claimed that his presence alongside Sugiono reflects the concern of the Indonesian nation over the death of Ayatollah Khamenei. “Our presence is the official representation of the government and all the people of Indonesia who mourn the passing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei,” he stated.
A day earlier, on Monday, 6 July, Foreign Minister Sugiono had already announced the plan for his and Muzani’s departure to Iran. The plan has also been communicated to the Iranian government. “We are still awaiting confirmation of the time and place where we can attend the funeral ceremony,” Sugiono said in East Jakarta on Monday.
Sugiono explained that the Indonesian government had initially planned to send only the Indonesian Ambassador to Iran, Rolliansyah Soemirat. This was because, upon receiving the funeral invitation from Iran, Indonesia was busy preparing for various state visits from several friendly nations to Jakarta. However, Sugiono stated that Indonesia subsequently received information from Iran that the country was only granting access to officials above the rank of ambassador for the funeral event. He claimed Iran only conveyed this information on Thursday, 2 July 2026, one day before the funeral ceremonies began. Sugiono said Indonesia had not yet had the opportunity to send a replacement after receiving that information. Currently, he said, Iran is still making preparations to receive his and Muzani’s visit as representatives of Indonesia.
Khamenei was killed in a joint US-Israeli strike targeting his residence on 28 February. He died alongside his daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandson, and toddler granddaughter. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who was injured in the attack, was subsequently selected to replace his father as Iran’s Supreme Leader. As reported by Anadolu, the funeral ceremonies officially began on Saturday, 4 July 2026, at the Mosalla Imam Khomeini complex.
