MPR Speaker Calls on Muslim Nations to Fight for Palestinian Independence

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) of the Republic of Indonesia, Ahmad Muzani, has called on Muslim-majority nations to bolster unity and continue advocating for the realisation of Palestinian independence as part of the Islamic world’s commitment to global peace and justice.

In a statement released in Jakarta, Muzani said the Islamic world bears a moral responsibility to persistently voice calls for an end to the conflict and to support the Palestinian people’s right to independence.

“We must make this a reality. This is our debt. Palestinian independence is also a responsibility under the Indonesian constitution,” Muzani said while attending the International Summit of Religious Affairs in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Friday.

According to him, support for Palestine aligns with the mandate of the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution, which affirms that independence is the right of all nations and that colonialism must be abolished because it contradicts humanity and justice.

“War is an evil that destroys human life. Children become victims, hundreds of thousands of lives are lost, and it causes geopolitical uncertainty,” he stated.

Beyond highlighting the Palestinian issue, Muzani also emphasised the importance of strengthening the Islamic world’s role in facing global challenges by improving the quality of education, healthcare, technological mastery, and poverty reduction.

He cited the progress achieved by Indonesia and Malaysia as Muslim-majority countries that are steadily moving towards developed nation status through human resource development and the reinforcement of economic stability.

Muzani assessed that the advancement of the Islamic world must also be accompanied by the ability to adapt to the times. According to him, innovation and creativity must be continuously developed so that Islam is increasingly recognised as a tolerant, moderate teaching that brings benefits to society.

“Islam must adapt to the changing times. Innovation and creativity must be realised for the development of an increasingly tolerant and moderate Islam,” he said.

“We must strengthen unity among our nations even though we differ in religion and country. In fact, those differences become our strength to continue uniting to create peace in the world,” Muzani concluded.
