MPR Speaker Calls for Stronger Indonesia-China Cooperation on Poverty Eradication

Speaker of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani believes Indonesia can strengthen cooperation with China on poverty eradication, noting China’s dramatic success in lifting its citizens out of poverty. Speaking after an event at the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta on Wednesday, Muzani said China has transformed over recent decades into a modern nation capable of providing maximum services to its people. He pointed out that the Chinese government’s effective performance in combating poverty has not only supported welfare but also raised life expectancy to around 80 years. By eradicating poverty, Muzani added, China has managed to maintain national togetherness, unity, and fraternity—an achievement Indonesia should replicate by continuously improving the fulfilment of basic needs. Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Wang Lutong described poverty alleviation as one of the cooperation sectors that can still be strengthened with Indonesia. He noted there are many new areas of cooperation to explore, including poverty eradication, green transition, and bilateral dialogue. Ambassador Wang specifically expressed the Chinese Communist Party’s desire to enhance dialogue with political partners in Indonesia on poverty alleviation, aligning with its broader aim to increase interaction and exchanges with the Indonesian government and various political parties on governance, development, and social management issues of mutual concern. He expressed hope that Indonesia and China will continue to build consensus and realise an increasingly effective bilateral relationship to achieve their respective national development visions.
