MPR Library Holds Creative Literacy Event: 'Democracy in a Cup of Coffee'
The Library of the MPR RI held a Creative Literacy event themed ‘Democracy in a Cup of Coffee, Barista Laboratory and Constitutional Literacy’ at the MPR RI Library, Nusantara IV Building, Parliamentary Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday (9 July 2026). The activity combined coffee-making training with the strengthening of democracy and constitutional literacy for staff within the Secretariat General of the MPR RI.
Organised in cooperation with Treestori Coffee, the event was attended by Acting Secretary General of the MPR RI Siti Fauziah, Head of the Public Relations and Information Systems Bureau of the MPR RI Secretariat General Budi Muliawan, and around 50 staff members as participants.
Senior Middle Librarian Yusniar said the activity was part of the library’s effort to present innovative programmes that not only foster reading interest but also develop creativity, skills and staff competencies.
Yusniar explained that the library is no longer merely a place for storing collections, but a space for learning, sharing knowledge and building innovation. The theme was also inspired by the collection of books on coffee available at the MPR Digital Library, ranging from coffee cultivation to café business management.
The workshop featured Treestori Coffee founders Thao Ziang and Christyana Henrietta, who delivered material as well as hands-on practice on basic coffee processing and serving techniques. All practice equipment was prepared by the organisers so that participants could follow the training interactively.
When opening the event, Acting Secretary General of the MPR RI Siti Fauziah said the theme carried deep philosophical meaning. According to her, a delicious cup of coffee is born from a blend of different elements, just as democracy is built through togetherness and collaboration.

She hoped the training would not only equip participants with coffee-making skills, but also serve as a means of learning about the values of democracy, cooperation and precision. She also expressed appreciation for the involvement of baristas with disabilities, which she regarded as an inspiration about the importance of equal opportunities for everyone to make a contribution.
Meanwhile, Treestori Coffee founder Thao Ziang explained that the theme ‘Democracy in a Cup of Coffee’ was chosen because the process of producing a cup of coffee involves many parties, from farmers and roasteries to baristas. He revealed that the process reflects democracy, which can only be realised through cooperation, communication and mutual respect.

He added that Treestori Coffee also wished to promote the value of inclusivity through the involvement of baristas with disabilities, including those with autism, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities and deafness. According to him, democracy is present not only in political processes, but also when every individual is given an equal opportunity to grow and contribute.
At the end of the event, participants watched a coffee-making demonstration presented by the baristas with disabilities. The performance served as the closing of an activity that combined literacy, skills and a message about an inclusive democracy that values diversity.
