MPR Library Holds Creative Literacy Event: 'Democracy in a Cup of Coffee'

The MPR Library held a Creative Literacy event themed ‘Democracy in a Cup of Coffee, Barista Laboratory and Constitutional Literacy’ at the Nusantara IV Building, Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday (9/7/2026). The activity combined coffee brewing training with strengthening democratic and constitutional literacy for employees within the Secretariat General of the MPR. The event, held in collaboration with Treestori Coffee, was attended by Acting Secretary General of the MPR Siti Fauziah, Head of the Public Relations and Information Systems Bureau Budi Muliawan, and around 50 employees as participants. Senior Librarian Yusniar stated that the activity was part of the library’s effort to present innovative programmes that not only increase reading interest but also develop creativity, skills, and employee competence. Yusniar expressed that the library is no longer merely a place for storing collections, but a space for learning, sharing knowledge, and building innovation. The theme was also inspired by a collection of books about coffee available in the MPR Digital Library, ranging from coffee cultivation to coffee shop business management. The workshop featured Treestori Coffee founders Thao Ziang and Christyana Henrietta, who provided material and hands-on practice on basic coffee processing and serving techniques. All practice equipment was prepared by the committee so participants could follow the training interactively. While opening the event, Acting Secretary General of the MPR Siti Fauziah said the theme carried a deep philosophical meaning. According to her, a delicious cup of coffee is born from a blend of different elements, just as democracy is built through togetherness and collaboration. She expressed hope that the training would not only provide coffee brewing skills but also serve as a means of learning about the values of democracy, cooperation, and precision. She also appreciated the involvement of baristas with disabilities, which she considered an inspiration about equal opportunities for everyone to contribute. Founder of Treestori Coffee Thao Ziang explained that the theme ‘Democracy in a Cup of Coffee’ was chosen because the process of producing a cup of coffee involves many parties, from farmers and roasteries to baristas, reflecting a democracy that can only be realised through cooperation, communication, and mutual respect. He added that Treestori Coffee also wanted to introduce the value of inclusivity through the involvement of baristas with disabilities, such as autism, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, and deafness. According to him, democracy is not only present in political processes but also when every individual is given equal opportunity to develop and contribute. At the end of the activity, participants watched a coffee brewing demonstration performed by baristas with disabilities. The performance concluded the event, which combined literacy, skills, and a message about inclusive democracy that respects diversity.
