MPR Leadership Meets Constitutional Court Justices

The leadership of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) visited the leadership of the Constitutional Court for a National Gathering agenda. The meeting was held at the Court Building in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, 8 July 2026. MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani said that during the gathering, his institution discussed a number of matters, including preparations for the upcoming Annual Session. The Court is one of the institutions on the session’s invitation list. “The discussion covered many things, but was limited by not touching on matters that fall under the authority of the constitutional justices,” Muzani said at the Court Building. He stated that in the discussion, the MPR talked about each institution respecting the other’s position in efforts to safeguard the people’s sovereignty. For example, according to the constitution, the MPR has the task of amending the 1945 Constitution. Meanwhile, the Court, he said, according to the 1945 Constitution, has the authority to interpret it. “We agreed not to interfere in each other’s affairs, including each other’s internal matters,” Muzani said. Nevertheless, he continued, the MPR and the Court also agreed to communicate with each other in providing constitutional interpretation. This is because, in the context of the 1945 Constitution, the institution that best understands the constitution is the MPR. “Therefore, before the Court makes a decision on interpretation, we reminded them, we conveyed that they should listen to the MPR’s views at the time the 1945 Constitution was amended,” said the Gerindra Party politician. Muzani was accompanied by MPR Deputy Chairpersons Hidayat Nur Wahid, Rusdi Kirana, and Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono, as well as MPR Secretary General Siti Fauziah. Based on Tempo’s observation at the location, the closed-door gathering lasted approximately 120 minutes, with the Court represented by its chief justice, deputy chief justice, and several constitutional justices.
