MPR deputy urges strict hygiene standards in free meal programme
“We must ensure that all food ingredients are hygienic and meet proper nutritional value. This concerns the health of our children,” Yudhoyono said in a statement confirmed on Sunday.
He stressed that washing and drying procedures for food containers used in the MBG distribution process must be closely monitored to prevent contamination.
According to him, the cleanliness of eating utensils is as critical as the quality of the meals themselves in ensuring food safety.
“It is not only the food that must be healthy, but the containers must also be sterile. The washing and drying processes must be strictly supervised as this is an essential part of preventing health risks,” he said.
During the Ramadan fasting month, he reminded program managers that adjustments to dry meal menus must not undermine established standards.
“Although the menu differs during Ramadan, portions, nutritional content and budget use must remain in line with the standards. We must avoid incidents such as food poisoning,” he cautioned.
He said the reminder was necessary because the MBG program is a national strategic initiative funded by taxpayers and therefore demands accountable and optimal implementation.
Separately, Yudhoyono praised operations at SPPG Karanglo in Ponorogo District, East Java, saying the unit had received positive feedback from the community.
He noted that students, particularly those from underprivileged families, responded favorably to meal taste and portion sizes that meet nutritional needs.
He expressed hope that SPPG Karanglo could serve as a model for professional and hygienic nutrition service kitchens across Indonesia.
He added that well-managed units could also help strengthen local food security and support regional economic activity alongside improving children’s health outcomes.
