As tourist interest in visiting Karimunjawa increases, beach cleanliness has become one of the challenges that must be consistently addressed. This was emphasised by Deputy Speaker of the MPR RI, Lestari Moerdijat, during a public aspiration event themed ‘Environmentally Sound National Development’, which was packaged as a beach clean-up action with the community in Karimunjawa Village, Karimunjawa District, Jepara Regency, Central Java. ‘The arrival of tourists in Karimunjawa does not solely bring income for residents, but demands the responsibility of all parties to maintain the cleanliness of the environment,’ said Lestari in a written statement on Sunday (21/6/2026). Besides the beach clean-up, during the activity Rerie, as Lestari is affectionately known, together with Deputy Chairman of the Jepara Regency DPRD H. Pratikno and environmental activists, released turtle hatchlings on a beach named Pantai Lestari Ceria. At the inauguration of the beach’s name, Rerie expressed hope that Pantai Lestari Ceria, besides being a tourist spot, could also become an educational site so that the environment in Karimunjawa remains sustainable. Karimunjawa Village Head Arif Setiawan, who is also a tourism operator, in his remarks supported Pantai Lestari Ceria’s role as an environmental education centre. Arif said that besides generating income for the community, the beauty of the beach can also provide understanding to villagers about preserving the beauty and environment at Pantai Lestari Ceria, Karimunjawa Village. Arif also advised tourism operators in Karimunjawa not to solely pursue profit in running their businesses, but to also actively participate in maintaining environmental sustainability.
