MPR Deputy Speaker: Renewable Energy Bill to be Finalised This Year

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Eddy Soeparno has stated that the Draft Law on New and Renewable Energy (EBET) is targeted for completion this year.

“The draft law on new and renewable energy will hopefully be ratified soon, because 95 percent of the bill is already complete,” said Eddy, who is also a member of House of Representatives Commission XII, in Jakarta on Tuesday.

According to him, the existence of this regulation will provide clarity for Indonesia’s energy transition. This is further supported by several other laws currently being developed.

“We will also discuss a new law concerning climate change management. So, there are two regulations supporting our energy transition,” he stated.

Beyond these two regulations, Eddy added, the most important aspect is that the implementation of the energy transition is already outlined in the national energy policy and the 2025-2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL).

He added that when the RUPTL is implemented, it will be necessary to revise other laws, such as the Electricity Law.

“So that our electricity sector in the future will be based on green energy sources, in line with the RUPTL currently being implemented,” he said.

He added that these regulations represent an effort to harness Indonesia’s abundant renewable energy sources.

Eddy noted that currently, renewable energy remains underutilised, while the country still relies on imports despite possessing abundant fossil energy resources.

“We are a country rich in renewable energy sources. Starting from solar, geothermal, wind, water, and many others. Yet amidst these renewable energy sources we possess, today our energy needs still rely on imports of 1 million barrels of crude oil per day, and we also import 3-kilogramme LPG,” he added.
